You Can’t STEP to This!

Certain to become a HIFA legend, Step Afrika! lived up to their billing as the most expressive and energetic step crew around with an explosive performance at the 7 Arts to a hugely appreciative audience. Described as a polyrhythmic, percussive dance form it originated amongst fraternities and sororities at historically black American colleges but the Step Afrika show was on a whole different level.

The pieces were intense but varied, ranging from a step “challenge” of the sexes to “Wade”, a celebration of African-American and African culture including tap, gumboot dancing and stepping, all to haunting Negro spirituals backed by the Chitungwiza Harmony Singers. Members of the audience were even invited to learn a simple routine but nothing could stop the Step Afrika dancers continually ratcheting up the energy and skill. I was blown away, from solo performances to the full crew at “attention”, they stomped and pounded and slapped and clapped and ripped the stage to pieces.

You Can Step to This Though!

The Youth Zone was treated to a thrilling sneak peek at Step Afrika! with a masterful performance for a youthful and enthusiastic crowd, keen to imitate these new heroes of dance. Not content to stop there though, the group went on a trip to the Young Afrika Skill Centre in Chitungwiza where they performed and workshopped with the students there, furthering cultural exchange and giving as many as possible an opportunity to be inspired and to learn. Huge thanks to all those involved in making this happen.
