HIVOS CONVERSATIONS WOMEN LEAD

6 May 2018

“The Women’s Movement has no timeline and starts the moment you are born and it doesn’t stop!”

The Women’s Movement in Zimbabwe began way before Mbuya Nehanda into the Liberation War and into this year is the 80th year of the Women’s Movement which began in Zimbabwe in 1938 in Breaside police station under a tree which was known as the African Women’s Clubs by Helen Vera-Mangwende. They began by equipping women with greater know-how on how to manage their homes and creating sustenance out of what they had and have evolved into women in trade unions, media and other sectors.

The conversation at HIFA on the Women’s Movement in Zimbabwe was held by Rita Nyamupinga, Charity Chaturuka, Dr. Nyangulu and Sekai Holland took the audience through the past, present and future of the movement. In every community there is a space for women to continue advocating. In order for growth there need to be mentorship of women and take the opportunities provided to them.

The conversation was deep, but not inaccessible. The clarion call:was to seek out women’s stories in your family from your mother and grandmother as they have the knowledge of the movement and then interact with men as they play an integral role in the movement. In a nutshell, the Women’s Movement in Zimbabwe is in essence a community movement.

The setting and timing of these conversations are paramount in ensuring Zimbabwe takes its place on the global stage.
