An Uncannily Fitting Metaphor For The Country: Come Rain Or Shine, The Show Will Go On......And Succeed!

1 May 2018

James Blaszko’s production of the opening night show at HIFA 2018, blew away the audience that braved the rains to be part of the unforgettable party featuring over 100 singers, dancers, acrobats, musicians and puppeteers from all over the world.

The show titled “We Count” and held at the ZOL Main Stage and presented by BancABC set a high standard for all shows to follow. The energy presented by the generally youthful performers ignited a vibe in the audience that rendered the rain nothing but part of the background sound and a stage prop or special effect.

Featuring Zimbabwean stars like Prudence Katomeni, Hope Masike, Caroleen Masa, that communicated diverse artist expressions of what it means to be Zimbabwean, with Hope Masike performing an energetic traditional piece, Masa shaking up the crowd with her township groove and the seasoned Prudence Katomeni shaking up the crowd with her distinct voice.

An unusual but very fascinating performance was the Italian Ambassador Enrico De Agostini featuring in the “Move On” project. This is a collaboration of artist of different nationalities inspiring the audience to move on from the past sorrows and perceptions of a terrible Zimbabwe.

A call to reawaken self-pride in being Zimbabwean was a constant theme throughout the electric performance. From the natural wonders bestowed on Zimbabwe including but not limited to Victoria Falls, to the heritage of The Great Zimbabwe monument, through to the warm heart of Zimbabweans, their peace-loving nature, hard work and general resilience to all the pains we have had to endure as a country.

“We Count” is a reminder to every Zimbabwean that the future is there for the taking. Musical Director – Blessing Chimanga did a very fantastic job in his selection of songs, to both communicate with and entertain the audience.

It will take a lot for any of the people in audience to forget the energy, hope, and good vibes brought about by this sterling production.
